Spending Local Money On What Matters To Local People

Mid Beds District Council's Executive will consider at its meeting on 6 February, how much Council Tax we should charge this year, for the 100 plus services we provide.

Our proposed 4.3% increase means an extra £4.50 a year on Band D Council Tax in the district or less than 9p extra a week. Our Council Tax remains the lowest District Tax in Bedfordshire.

The County Council needs an extra £41.13 per year from a Band D taxpayer, which equals an increase of 3.8%.

In a joint statement Council Leader Tricia Turner and Finance Portfolio Holder Councillor Maurice Jones, said: “Mid Beds is one of the fastest growing districts in the country, recognised for its sound financial management.

“Mid Beds aims to provide quality services representing good ‘value for money’ for residents within the resources available.

“Mid Beds is a listening council and following the overwhelming success of our pilot kitchen waste collection, we are proposing to extend the opportunity to every household in the district. Mid Beds residents will also enjoy additional fitness and leisure facilities in the Stotfold area; and we are proposing an extension of the Bedford Credit Union to cover all of Mid Beds.

“Our budget must balance. In order to fund these extras, we are asking for an additional 9p per week from a Band D taxpayer, yet our council remains one of the lowest charging across the country.

“We will continue to focus on finding savings.  We will deliver the services that our residents have agreed are important and review spending proposals in areas of lesser priority.  This year’s budget will ensure the sound management of public money, bringing spending in line with income.”

“Remember your Council Tax bill also includes charges for services provided by Bedfordshire County Council, The Fire service, the Police and Town or Parish councils, which Mid Beds collects on their behalf.”

The Executive will make a recommendation to a special Council budget meeting scheduled for 28 February, for their final decision.
