Getting to the Bottom of it

A well known quiet lane in Harlington, popular with walkers and cyclists, is again being targetted by callous fly-tippers with no care for the beautiful surroundings.

The lane known locally as “The Bottoms” has historically been a  notorious target in Mid Beds for fly-tippers. There had been a reduction in incidents during 2007, however, since February 2008,  flytipping has been on the increase again, with a flytipping incident on average each week.

The volume of fly-tipped waste left there since February, is equivalent to approximately six transit van loads and includes building waste, car parts and house clearance items.

Mid Beds clears all incidences of fly-tipping on public land and investigates for evidence of its origin and, if we can trace the guilty party, we will prosecute where possible.

Under The Clean Neighbourhoods Act, all residents now have a responsibility to ensure they check any contractors they employ, e.g. for house clearance, building works etc. who remove waste from their home has a valid waste carriers licence from the Environment Agency. These can be checked online instantly at
http://www2.environment-agency.gov.uk/epr/search.asp?type=register or by calling their General Enquiries line -  08708 506 506 (Mon-Fri 8-6), with the contractor’s name and address or business name and  address. The contractor should also provide their customers with a Duty of Care Note which is an audit trail of where the waste has come from to where it will be disposed.

If this is not done, then the householder is equally as liable to prosecution as the fly-tipper.

Mid Beds are appealing for witnesses to be our eyes and ears in the district and come forward to report any fly-tipping offences they witness, with as much information as possible, particularly vehicle details and times.   We are particularly interested to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the recent spate of fly-tipping in Harlington.  Please contact us on 08452 30 40 40.
