More recycling Advice From Mid Beds

Mid Beds District Council has received £150,000 to provide extra help to assist people to recycle more.

Two new Recycling Support Officers will provide face-to-face help and advice to local people to improve recycling rates. While recycling in Mid Beds has increased from 12% in 2003 to almost 33% in 2007, Mid Beds thinks even more can be achieved.

It’s well known that talking to people is the best way to get a message across. To help people understand what can be recycled and to enable them to recycle more the Recycle Support Officers will out and about during the day throughout the area.

Better still the new posts are not funded by local council tax but use Local Area Agreement money provided by the Government through a Waste Performance Efficiency Grant (WPEG) targeted to increasing recycling and reducing the amount of waste dumped at landfill sites.

The new officers have a wide range of duties including:
- increasing current recycling and composting rates
- undertaking educational and promotional campaigns
- assisting in rolling out new recycling schemes, such as kitchen waste collection
- helping train collection crews

Gary Alderson, Director of Environment and Planning Services, said: “People in Mid Beds already do a great job of recycling. The Council wants to build on this by offering more face-to-face advice for existing residents and recognising that people moving into the area often need more help and support to get the most out of the scheme. Our Recycling Support Officers can explain why its important to recycle, how easy it can be to do it and help any people who are confused about what they can and can’t put into their recycling bins.

“They will also be there to explain how new initiatives like kitchen waste collection works and advise people on how to reduce and reuse their waste.”
