Mid Beds Residents Doing Their Bit for Global Warming

Figures for Mid Beds show that over a third of all waste collected in the district is being sent for recycling.  25% of waste collected is recycled and a further 9% sent for central composting.

In addition, the amount of waste collected per head of population has seen a reduction of 6% for 2006/07 building on an exceptional reduction of 8.7% in 2005/06 which saw Mid Beds achieve the 10th best waste reduction of all Council areas in England.

Gary Alderson, Director of Environmental and Planning Services at Mid Beds said: "This is a terrific result and all residents should be justly proud of their efforts in reducing the amount of waste they produce, carefully separating their recyclables and home composting.

"Their efforts are seeing a real reduction in waste going to landfill and in turn, a significant reduction in the creation of greenhouse gases, seen as a major source of Global Warming. Natural resources are being conserved through the recycling of waste into a useful resource.”

"We will continue working closely with our partners to achieve the optimum reduction in the amount of waste going to landfill. This includes working to expand the range of recyclables that can be collected and new ways of managing waste including encouraging home composting."

Approximately 6000 households in parts of Cranfield, Flitwick, Potton, Sandy and Shefford are currently taking part in Mid Beds' trial kitchen waste collection scheme,  The trial, which began on 2 April, has seen a very encouraging take up by residents and participation rates of up to 80% have been recorded.
