Mid Beds Moving To Another World (and watching An Inconvenient Truth)
Mid Beds District Council will show its commitment to reducing climate change by signing the Nottingham Declaration at our first Climate Change Conference – Moving to Another World on Wednesday 16 May.
The Nottingham Declaration was adopted at a local authority conference held in Nottingham in 2002. By signing this voluntary pledge, Mid Beds agrees to develop plans with partners, the local community and industries to address the causes and impact of climate change and the effects these will have on the economy and environment.
To set the scene, on the eve of the conference - and for one night only - the Council Chamber at Mid Beds’ offices at Chicksands, will open its doors at 7.30pm to the public, to show the Al Gore Film – An Inconvenient Truth. The film will be screened for free to give local people the opportunity to see this ground breaking film and to help set the agenda for the following day’s conference.
Organised by Mid Beds, with the Local Strategic Partnership, the Climate Change Conference, at the Forest Centre Marston Moretaine, will focus on the science of climate change and how it affects us all. Keynote speakers will explain how climate change can impact on our everyday lives and that of the business community.
A range of workshops will take place in the afternoon to identify practical ways and priorities for how we can all improve the environment and work to reduce our carbon footprint.
Mid Beds is taking a lead on ways of energy saving and sustainability. It has recently requested Cranfield University to undertake a carbon assessment of the council. The findings from that assessment will be the basis of an action plan, which will be implemented over the coming months and years.
The Council cannot tackle climate change alone, but every Mid Beds resident can contribute to the overcoming of this threat to our planet in some way.
