Information management
Information Management (IM) is central to the effective and efficient operation of the Council.
Establishing a more coherent and consistent approach to IM will help the Council to:
- Share Information and knowledge as a corporate resource and facilitate collaborative forms of working;
- Save time searching for information and avoid duplicating effort by re-using what already exists;
- Leave clear decision trails for audit and accountability purposes, and meet our statutory requirements under Freedom of Information and Data Protection Act;
- Use our information systems to better effect, and in ways that make our jobs easier;
- Improve corporate communications externally by presenting a consistent and coherent picture to our stakeholders.
The Information Management Policy sets out seven principles for managing information:
- The Council will make information accessible to all who need it.
- The Council will ensure that information is fit for purpose.
- The Council will ensure that staff and members are trained in aspects of information management and use relevant to their post.
- The Council will store and use information in compliance with legal obligations and for maximum accountability and transparency.
- The Council will provide staff and elected members with the Official Systems they need to do their duties effectively. Staff and elected members will ensure such systems are used properly and in accordance with the standards for acceptable use.
- The Council will keep information secure, while providing access to all who need it.
- The Council will store information once for re-use many times, and dispose of it when no longer needed.
