The Scenic Route

Mid Beds Scenic Route 2004 Leaflet

A scenic route meanders through the towns and villages of Mid Bedfordshire taking you through the undulating countryside of this largely undiscovered part of England. A colour guide, available from the tourist information centre, details places of interest en route and is complete with a large pictorial map (click on the Scenic map that is on your right) to guide you on your way. The route is signposted using the brown and white tourism signs. These can be found at major junctions and where the route diverts.

Covering a distance of some 80-miles you can join and leave the route at any point – the hardy traveller can of course complete the route in full. Using the A1 and M1 it is easy to make your way round in a clockwise direction. From the M1 your first port of call will be the historic Georgian town of Ampthill and from the A1 head for the old market town of Sandy and beyond. The Mid Bedfordshire Scenic Route passes many of the main attractions in the district which can be visited or passed by for a visit at a later date.

This leisurely route can be enjoyed over a whole day or in a tour of just 2-3 hours. There is plenty of opportunity to stop and spend time at one of the many eating establishments en route - be sure to collect a copy of the Mid Beds Food and Drink Guide.

The main towns and villages on the route include Ampthill, Old Warden, Sandy, Potten, Biggleswade, Shefford, Silsoe, Harlington and Woburn. Further information on these places are detailed in the 'Out And About' section of these web pages.
