Background
Mid Beds District Council has been implementing a rolling programme of town centre enhancement schemes since the late 1990’s. The Urban Designers, Qube, based in Cambridge, are being used by Mid Beds to produce the concept design for the enhancement of the Market Square, Potton.
The overall objectives of the scheme are:
- to give greater priority to pedestrians - particularly outside the shops to make the market square more visually attractive
- to reduce the visual dominance of parked cars
- to be sympathetic to the historic nature of the square
- to make the market square 'work better'
- to minimise clutter (visual and physical)
- to be robust / vandal resistant and be capable of easy and high quality maintenance
The detailed design proposals also need to take account of the budget available, legal requirements and highway safety considerations and underground services, including drainage.
