Conservation & Design

The Conservation & Design Team

We are a highly experienced team here to provide advice on the conservation and design aspects of the District's built environment.

Although much of our work is involved with the development control process, advising on listed building consent applications and planning and other applications that affect the historic environment, we also:

  • give free advice on the repair, restoration and alteration of historic buildings;
  • advise on the likelihood of buildings being listed and assess the suitability of proposed works to buildings which are listed;
  • advise on the management of complex historic buildings through conservation plans/services strategies and help owners with the long term maintenance, repair and adaption of historic buildings;
  • propose areas to be designated as  conservation areas and produce appraisal and enhancement documents for existing conservation areas;
  • advise on possible grant aid for historic building repairs; and
  • encourage interest in the District and its buildings through talks and the production of information leaflets.

Conservation Area Appraisals & Reviews

Each Appraisal will consider the character, appearance and setting of the conservation area, as well as identifying areas for possible future enhancement, that would benefit the amenity of the conservation area.  The appraisals will seek to identify what comprises the special interest of the conservation area and contributes to the familiar and cherished local scene, and the sense of local distinctiveness, that is so important in defining the identity, harmony and unique sense of place.
