Recreational Open Space

Physical activity is an essential part of a healthy life-style, and the district’s play areas, sportsgrounds and amenity open spaces offer a cheap, local and fun way to get adults and children active.

If you require funding assistance with your proposed Play and Open Space Scheme then click on the following link to download the Outdoor Play and Open Space Provision - Funding Procedure to see if you comply with its criteria.

There is a wide range of locations and activities across the district that can offer opportunities to play, enjoy sporting activities or simply walk or have a picnic.  The Councils’ Recreational Open Space Strategy provides a comprehensive listing of all open space sites in Mid Beds which are open to the public. The information is listed by settlement and also gives the site size and open space category - see links below for strategies:

Children’s Play Areas
The Children’s Play Areas include both formal, equipped play areas, and informal playspace, all of which have public access.  With the exception of the Mid Beds sites, all other sites are owned by the relevant Town or Parish Council.
Please click on the following link for a detailed list of all the Children's Play Areas in Mid Beds.

Outdoor Sport
This includes all football, cricket and rugby outdoor pitches, plus tennis courts, bowling greens and multi-use games areas.  Ownership of these sites can be either by town or parish councils, clubs or local schools, please check for any opening restrictions or charges for use.

Amenity Open Space
This list comprises amenity sites which can range from major historic parkland such as Ampthill Park, to local nature reserves, formal gardens and playing fields, to small informal open spaces in residential areas. Ownership of these sites can be either by the Town or Parish Councils, Bedfordshire County Council or Mid Beds Council.  Some sites can also be under the management of one of the three Countryside Projects (listed below) operating in the District, please check for any opening restrictions or entrance charges.

Countryside Projects
Three countryside organisations (listed below) operate in Mid Beds, managing a variety of amenity open space sites, stretching from Potton in the east, to Aspley Guise in the west.  They independently manage sites, as well as working in partnership with other councils, local and national organisations, and the public to actively safeguard and improve a diverse range of sites, both small and large.
