Where can I find out about the new law on smoking in public?

On Sunday July 1st 2007 at 6am Mid Beds, along with the rest of England, went Smokefree!

The new smokefree law was introduced to protect employees and the public from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.

It is against the law to smoke in virtually all enclosed public places, workplaces and in public and work vehicles.

Indoor smoking rooms are no longer allowed; managers of smokefree premises have legal responsibilities to prevent smoking and to ensure that the correct no smoking signs are displayed at entrances to premises etc.

The law applies to anything that can be smoked such as cigarettes, pipes, cigars and herbal cigarettes.

Failure to comply with the law can lead to Fixed Penalty Notices for smokers and fines of upto £2500 for businesses for permitting smoking in smokefree premises.

MBDC is the enforcing authority for this legislation within the Mid Beds district.
