Work Environment
The Work Environment Team deals with Environmental Health issues related to work or commercial activities. These areas include:
Food
To ensure that all food premises manufacturing, processing, storing or selling food are registered, licensed or approved as appropriate and comply with legislation.
To ensure that food for sale within the District meets food safety requirements and any unfit food is removed and correctly disposed of.
To reduce communicable disease and food-borne illness, through information, education and advice. To identify causes and sources of infection and to take steps to eliminate them and reduce the risk of these being spread to others.
Health and Safety
To ensure a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, self-employed persons and others for which the Council is the relevant enforcing authority through inspections, investigation of accident, complaints and other activities.
To advise the Council and its Officers on Health, Safety and Welfare of all its employees and others who may be affected by its activities in order to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
Animal Welfare
To ensure that all premises housing, boarding, hiring or selling animals are licensed, and that licensing conditions are complied with in order that adequate animal welfare standards are maintained. This would include minimising the risk of injury and spread of disease.
Pollution
To collect and maintain information on land which may be contaminated. Where remediation is found to be necessary a variety of controls and measures are used, including the redevelopment of land through the planning process. Specialist advice and information is provided to the public and developers.
To care for, protect and improve the environment through the control of pollution and nuisance by investigating complaints relating to issues such as noise, odour, smoke, accumulations, and defective drainage.
To use regimes introduced by the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999 to control air pollution from certain industrial processes in Mid Beds. This extends to also include controls on water pollution, land contamination, energy usage and accident prevention for certain larger industrial sites.
To carry out Air Quality Management Reviews of the area and monitor the quality of air in the District.
To monitor the quality of water from all private water supplies and swimming pools used by members of the public.
To provide advice on environmental health issues to Planning Services in relation to future development proposals and Licensing for Public Entertainment Licence applications.
