Intruder Alarms
Although intruder alarms help to protect our properties from intruders, occasionally they are triggered by things other than intruders, which leads to unnecessary disturbance to nearby residents. In some instances the sensitivity of the alarm requires adjusting and this may require the services of an alarm specialist.
Whilst it is not a legal requirement to register an intruder alarm, we do recommend that you notify ourselves of your (and any nominated keyholders') details (home, work or mobile phone numbers etc) so that we can contact someone who can turn the alarm off should it misfire.
Officers from the Council have the power under Section 80 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to serve notice on the owners of an intruder alarm that is creating a statutory noise nuisance requiring them to silence the alarm within an hour. If the homeowner fails to comply with the notice then the officer can arrange for the alarm to be silenced, which may involve obtaining a warrant to enter the property to carry out the necessary work, and securing the property once this has been achieved. Any costs incurred by the Council in carrying out this will be recovered from the homeowner.
