Information about the weekly food waste collections

Each household should recieve 2 brown bins and a supply of biodegradable bags.

The bags line the smaller kitchen caddy and when this is full, place the full bag into the larger outside container. You should have been provided with sufficient caddy liners for about six months. We will deliver another supply of liners every six months.

To help stop pests, please lock the bin by pulling the handle down over the top of the bin.

Your food waste is collected on a weekly basis, on the same day as your normal collection. Please put your larger food waste bin out for collection by 7am, at the edge of your property with the other waste or recycling.

Food waste is collected is separate smaller vehicles so it is possible that all your waste may not be collected at the same time of day.

Your food waste bin can be used to dispose of ;

  • Meat and fish - raw and cooked
  • Raw and cooked vegetables and fruit including peelings.
  • All dairy products such as cheese and eggs (including shells)
  • Breads,pastries and cakes
  • Pasta, rice and beans
  • Teabags and coffee grounds
  • Uneaten leftovers from dishes and plates (including fish and poultry bones)
  • Out-of-date food

Please do not place the following items in the food waste bin;

  • Large Bones
  • Liquids like coooking oil, fruit juice or soup
  • Packaging of any sort
  • Plastic bags or wrapping

Q. Why are we doing this?

A. Around 16% of the waste in your bin is food waste. Playing your part in the scheme will mean you can recycle even more waste and we can landfill even less!

Q. Will the food in my bin smell?

A. Not if you empty your caddy regularly into the outside bin and wipe it clean after use. Remember to tie the corn starch bags or wrap the food in newspaper before putting it into the outside bin.

Q.Why can't I use plastic bags to line my caddy?

A. Plastic bags don't rot down properly, upset the composting process and contaminate the end product. Even bags and packaging which may say it is biodegradable is not suitable. If you run out of bags use a sheet of newspaper to wrap food in.

Q. I compost at home already. Why should I use this scheme?

A.Please carry on composting your uncooked vegtables and fruit peelings in your compost bin or heap. Use the food leftovers which you can't home compost.
