What is Council Tax

Council Tax is a charge levied against domestic property to pay for those services provided by the District Council, the Bedfordshire Police Authority, the Beds & Luton Fire Authority, the County Council and the individual Parish Councils in the Mid Beds area

The level of the Council Tax is set each year dependant upon how much each of these “precepting” authorities needs to raise from local people

The amount that individual households pay is determined by placing low and high value properties into one of eight different valuation bands based on a valuation date of 1/4/1991 and making allowances for the way in which each property is occupied by a method of discounts and exemptions.

Information about the types of Exemption and Discounts available can be found at - Exemptions and Discounts

Information about Valuation Bands can be found at - Property Bands

The 2008/09 Council Tax leaflet contains information about your bill, the reductions and help available [including benefit], how the amounts are worked out and how they are spent and includes Town & County Council information, it can be found at Council Tax Leaflet 2008/09
