Gypsies and Travellers Introduction

Traditional Wagon

Mid Beds District Council supports the Government’s objective that Gypsies, Travellers, and settled communities live peacefully together.

Gypsies and Irish Travellers have lived in the UK for centuries, with the first records dating from 1514.

Gypsies and Irish Travellers are recognised ethnic groups under the Race Relations Act, having a shared culture, language and beliefs. Some groups move frequently, others live permanently in one area, and even when Gypsies and Travellers live in houses their culture and heritage stays with them.

There are a number of pieces of legislation and guidance relating to local authority responsibilities and through the Local Development Framework, we are currently identifying future site provision for Gypsies and Travellers in the district.
