The Mid Beds CSP aided by Home Office funding, initiates numerous projects to target the priorities of the residents of Mid Beds, which are set out in its Strategy.

In March 2006 the Government produced a document reviewing the operation of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 which will be implemented later in the year.  The review proposes that there will no longer be a three yearly audit process, but that audit will be carried out as a rolling programme by CDRP's and that a six monthly audit will be used to re-assess priorities and targets.

In preparation for these changes Mid Beds CDRP is undertaking the following actions:

-

Introduction of a countywide crime and anti-social behaviour recording system based on a GIS - in conjunction with the Bedford and South Beds CDRP's, known as SCRIBE.

-

Employing specialist analysts to work on behalf of the Partnerships to provide audit information on hotspots, changing crime types and the affects of ongoing or new initiatives

-

Allowing members of the public to report anti-social behaviour directly through the system and be able to view the non confidential information

-

Pilotings a merger of the 3 CDRP's within the County at Executive level, between April 2007, and lasting for one year. If successful, approval will be sought through the home office for the merger to become permanent.

-

Undertaking a full review of the 2005-2008 Strategy to separate the strategic responsibilities from those at a local operational level

-

Ensuring that the reviewed strategy links closely to the Local Area Agreement which the County Council has signed with the Government, where crime and disorder priorities have been established for the County

-

Setting up performance management systems with the County to ensure that Home Office funding (Safer and Stronger Communities Fund (SSCF)) is targeted to the areas within each CSP area of most need.

Further information about the progress of these actions will be made available as decisions are made.

Mid Beds District Council is also a member of the Bedfordshire Hate Crime Partnership.  This is a countywide network with representatives from the community, statutory and voluntary sectors who work together to:

  • raise awareness and take action about hate crimes
  • increase trust and confidence amongst minority communities within the whole community
  • encourage the reporting of hate crime incidents
  • facilitate information sharing and communication between agencies
  • ensure provision of support services to victims and appropriate action taken against perpetrators
  • develop a picture of the nature and extent of hate crimes in Bedfordshire

The Partnership now promotes the new national True Vision Campaign that encourages people to report any incident of hate crime.
