The area is one of varied landscape, influenced by agriculture and forestry activities, several large country estates and ancient monuments. The unique Greensand Ridge runs as a spine through the District, contributing to Mid Beds being the most heavily wooded part of the County. It is adjacent to the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is intersected by the rivers Ivel, Hiz, Flit and Elstow Brook.
